    不久，毛泽东的书篓里多了一套他爱不释手的书。那是他的部队在攻打井冈山附近的茶陵县高陇圩时，闯进了谭延�的老家。谭延�曾是清末进士，后来出任湖南省都督、湘军总司令。在谭家的藏书中，毛泽东得到了一套《三国演义》。虽说他早年多次读过《三国演义》，可眼下再读，却别有新意，从中可以学习许多作战的经验。所以，毛泽东曾说：“这真是拨开云雾见青天，快乐不可言。”（叶永烈：《历史选择了毛泽东》，上海人民出版社，1993年版，第103页。）

    据汪澍白编著的《毛泽东思想与中国文化传统》（厦门大学出版社，1987年12月版，第34页）：“1932年临时中央到达根据地，不但剥夺了毛泽东的军事指挥权，而且在《革命与战争》等刊物上连篇累牍地发表文章，从理论上对他进行批判,mens asics nimbus。教条主义者嘲讽毛泽东的军事路线‘把古代的《三国演义》无条件地当作现代的战术；古时的《孙子兵法》无条件地当作现代战略；更有好些博览群书的同志，拿半个世纪以前的曾国藩作为兵法之宝’。”

1945年8月，毛泽东赴重庆谈判前夕，江青替他准备了一批书，但他只挑选了《红楼梦》、《三国演义》等几种。（李清华：《雾都较量》，中共中央党校出版社，1994年版，第46页。）

    《定军山》，据《三国演义》第七十一回《占对山黄忠逸待劳，据汉水赵云寡胜众》。故事写东汉末年，曹操大军攻葭萌关，诸葛亮用激将法，命老将黄忠迎战。黄忠杀退曹军勇将张�，攻占屯粮的天荡山；又以逸待劳杀死夏侯渊，夺取了要塞定军山。

    1961年5月1日，毛泽东在上海过“五一”国际劳动节。据当时在上海市委机关从事接待工作的张玉华回忆：当天早上3时，我们几个人接到通知，说毛主席请我们同桌吃饭，一起欢度节日，真使我们喜出望外。我们上了主席餐车。吃饭时，毛主席对我们说，今天是“五一”国际劳动节，很快过端午节了，你们为我工作很辛苦，我请你们共同过节，表示感谢。当时，餐车上放了粽子。毛主席问我们端午节为什么吃粽子？我们回答，是纪念屈原，但具体缘由讲不清楚。毛主席说，我把关于屈原的故事讲给你们听，然后你们每人吃两只粽子，不然我就吃亏了嘛。一番话说得我们大笑起来。当毛主席讲完故事，我们把粽子吃掉后，毛主席很高兴地说，看来你们的饭量都不小，为了帮助消化，我再唱一段京剧助助兴。随即他唱了一段高庆奎的《逍遥津》。（中共上海市委党史研究室：《毛泽东在上海》，中共党史出版社，1993年版，第231～232页。）

   “关羽、张飞在古城相会”，见《三国演义》第二十八回“斩蔡阳兄弟释疑，会古城主臣聚义”。

    1930年5月，毛泽东作江西《寻邬调查》。他在“寻邬的文化”一节中写道：

    《失空斩》，即《失街亭》、《空城计》和《斩马谡》，《失街亭》三出戏的合名。故事写诸葛亮初出祁山，选择将领守街亭（今甘肃庄浪东南）要塞。马谡讨令驻守，但他刚愎自用，不听副将王平劝告，竟在山顶扎营，被魏将张�断了水道，蜀军大乱，失了街亭。《斩马谡》是写马谡失街亭后，与王平回营请罪。诸葛亮虽然爱惜马的才能，但因军律，只得挥泪把他处死。

    1946年12月1日，朱德六十大寿。毛泽东题词“人民的光荣”，以向朱德祝贺；晚上他还参加了祝贺晚会，观看了京剧《捉放曹》和《定军山》。（阎长林：《英明的决策――回忆毛主席1947年撤离延安的日子》，见《工人日报》1978年12月26日。）

    《捉放曹》，据《三国演义》第四回《废汉帝陈留践位，谋董贼孟德献刀》。故事写曹操献刀谋刺董卓没有成功，逃亡回乡。途中在中牟县被捕，但县令陈宫却弃官与曹同奔。路遇曹父故友吕伯奢，在他家留宿。吕家磨刀杀猪款待，曹操闻刀声顿起疑心，杀死吕伯奢及其全家。陈宫怨曹操残忍，夜投宿时，题诗弃曹而去。

    1960年12月25日，毛泽东在他的67岁寿辰时，在与部分亲属和身边工作人员聚餐时的谈话中，他又谈到了这件事。他说，在第二次国内革命战争时期，他先后受到过三次大的处分。“那时我没有事情做，走路坐在担架上，做什么？我看书！他抬他的担架，我看我的书。他们又批评我，说我凭着《三国演义》和《孙子兵法》指挥打仗。其实，《孙子兵法》当时我并没有看过，《三国演义》我看过几遍，但指挥作战时，谁还记得什么《三国演义》？统统忘了。”（忻中：《毛泽东晚年的读书生活》，《党史文汇》杂志，1994年第8期。）

    1932年1月，在那次批评他为“机会主义”、“狭隘经验论”的赣南会议之后，毛泽东又生病了。他带着贺子珍以及警卫班13个人，到东华山去了。东华山在瑞金东面二三十里外，山上树木蓊郁，山顶上有座古庙。毛泽东看中了这座古庙，住了进去。毛泽东在东华山住了50来天，连春节也是在那座古庙里冷冷清清地度过的。直到3月上旬的一天，周恩来派项英专门来请他下山。毛泽东在世外桃源般的东华山，埋头读书，津津有味地读《水浒传》、《三国演义》之类。（叶永烈：《历史选择了毛泽东》，上海人民出版社，1993年版，第295页。）

　　那是1928年，毛泽东率部在井冈山打游击。那时，他们经常神出鬼没地打土豪劣绅。一次，毛泽东想到土豪家里去看看是否有《三国演义》一类的书，因为他实在想重新阅读一下。可一位农民却告诉他：“没有了！没有了！昨天共了产。”毛泽东听了，只得遗憾地作罢。〔龚育之、逄先知、石仲泉：《毛泽东的读书生活》，三联书店，1986年版，第196页。另，参见孙琴安：《毛泽东和中国文学》（未刊稿）。〕

    1950年初，李和曾多次到中南海为毛泽东演出。据他回忆，有一次，他给毛泽东清唱高（庆奎）派代表作《逍遥津》以后，毛泽东说：“解放以后的演员应当高歌，黄钟大吕，不要阴沉沉的。高派的唱法是好的。所有的流派，包括高派，都要继承，又要发展。（李和曾：“毛主席给了我艺术生命”，见《毛泽东同志八十五诞辰纪念文选》，第196～197页。）

    1975年8月13日，芦荻向毛泽东请教《三国演义》、《红楼梦》和《水浒传》等几部古典小说的评价问题。这天，毛泽东先谈了《三国演义》、《红楼梦》等几部书，接着又谈了《水浒传》。（杨建业：《在毛主席身边读书――访北京大学中文系讲师芦荻》，《光明日报》，1978年12月29日。）

    《孙子兵法》，又名《孙子》，相传为春秋末年孙武所撰，现存13篇。这是中国和世界最古老的兵书，曹操曾为它作注和编“辑要”。

    《逍遥津》，即《曹操逼宫》，据《三国演义》第六十六回《关云长单刀赴会，伏皇后为国捐生》。故事写伏皇后和其父伏完受汉献帝密诏，拟联合孙权、刘备，里应外合，以铲除威逼汉室的曹操。不料泄密，曹操带剑入宫，把伏皇后乱棒打死，并杀了伏完全家。

    据《社会科学论坛》1995年第l期一篇文章中说：1959年4月23日，毛泽东阅读本日《北京晚报》连载的吴组缃《关于〈三国演义〉》（三），在旁作批示：“请秘书代为查找该文的第（一）、（二）两节，想看看。”

    1960年，毛泽东在浙江杭州南屏召开会议期间，在文艺晚会上，聆听了宋宝罗唱的京剧《空城计》。（李林达：《情满西湖》，中央文献出版社，1993年12月版，第242页。）

    后来，贺子珍听说有人诋毁毛泽东，说他指导革命不是用马列主义，而是用中国的旧小说《水浒传》、《三国演义》。贺子珍毫不客气地反驳说：“这种说法不对！我们的党领导土地革命，是受到了俄国十月革命的影响，是用马克思主义的基本原理作指导的。那时候，马列的书翻译过来的不多，尤其是我们在偏远的山区，能够看到的就更少了。记得当时在井冈山上，只有少数几本马列的书：《共产党宣言》、《共产主义ABC》等，毛泽东让用油印机印出来，发到各个连队学习。他还尽最大的努力普及马列主义知识。他同军队中的政工干部，经常轮流到各个连队讲课。当然，毛泽东是很熟悉中国的历史的，常常引用历史上的一些典故，作为工作的借鉴。古代的文学作品，如《三国演义》、《水浒传》等著作中的人物及事件，也常常被他引用来借古喻今。这些发生在古代中国土地上的事例，能够为中国的革命所用，这不是很正常、很好的事情吗？有什么不对呢？”（王行娟：《贺子珍的路》，作家出版社1985年版，第114～115页。）

    据贺子珍后来回忆：1929年前后，在井冈山的艰苦生活中，读书也许是毛泽东最大的乐趣了。他的口袋里常常装着一本书，有点空闲就拿出来看。所以，后勤部门为他做服装，都根据他的意思，把衣服的两个口袋做得大大的，好往里面装书。他博览群书，什么书都爱看。他读过几年私塾，古文根底很深，也喜欢李白、陆游等人的诗词，不但熟悉他们的作品，而且喜欢逐篇进行评价。在中国古典小说中，他最喜欢《红楼梦》、《水浒传》和《三国演义》，每种都看过好几遍。他的记忆力很好，看过的书都记得很清楚，而且善于汲取有用的东西，加以应用。

    1942年，邓宝珊将军在陕北榆林时期，常和部下讨论毛泽东在一些著作中阐明的观点，认为毛泽东精通辩证法，对问题看得远、看得深。他还说毛泽东学问渊博，读书很多，住的窑洞的书架上有马克思、恩格斯、列宁、斯大林著作，也有《三国演义》、《红楼梦》等古典文学作品，还有陕北各县的县志。（《肝胆篇》，《武汉文史资料》，1986年第4辑，第13页。另见，全国文史资料委员会等编：《邓宝珊将军》，文史资料出版社，1985年6月版，第186页。）

    女子可以说全部不识字，全县女子识字的不过三百人。男子文化程度并不很低，南半县文化因交通与广东的影响比北半县更加发达，依全县人口说，约计如下：不识字百分之六十；能识字百分之四十；识字二百个，百分之二十；能记账，百分之十五；能看三国，百分之五；能写信，百分之三点五；能做文章，百分之一。初小学生百分之五（五千人）；高小学生百分之八（八千人）；中学生五百人，大学生三十人；出洋学生六人，秀才四百人，举人一人。（上列的百分数，是每一项对于人口总数的比例。）（《毛泽东文集》第一卷，人民出版社，1993年版，第224页。）

    据赵超构访问延安的回忆：1944年6月12日，晚餐以后，我们在大礼堂看戏。这是由此间的平剧研究院演出的，演的是《古城会》、《打渔杀家》、《鸿鸾禧》、《草船借箭》四出戏。和我比肩的，正是毛泽东先生。戏早已上演了，他非常有兴味地听、看，从始到终。对于《古城会》中的张飞，对于《打渔杀家》中的教师爷，对于《鸿鸾禧》中的金老头，对于《草船借箭》中的鲁肃，他不断地发笑，不是微笑而是尽情地捧腹大笑。当演出张飞自夸“我老张是何等聪明之人”那一副得意的神情时，当教师爷演出种种没用的丑态时，当金老头在台上打诨时，他的笑声尤其响亮。在这时，我理解到毛先生和我们一般人是有共通的幽默与趣味的。他并不是那些一读政治报告，便将趣味、性灵加以贬斥的人物。他虽自谦“对于平剧没有研究”，但也承认：“很喜欢看看。”（赵超构：《延安归来》，南京新民报出版社，上海1946年2月再版。）

    据喜民编著的《璀璨的星系》（解放军文艺出版社，1993年版）：毛泽东对他自己的学习一直抓得很紧。在长征途中，有一次，因随身带的书看完了，到一个村子驻扎后，他对警卫员讲：“你去给我弄部水浒和三国来。”警卫员找到一户读书人，说要借个“水壶”和“仨锅”用。老先生看了看他，知道他是为穷人打天下的红军，就把自己正在用的水壶借给了他，并说家中没有三口锅，只有一口；且自家每天都得用，实在腾不出来。

    据忻中的记载：“1973年，毛泽东还先后两次向我要过《三国演义》，一次是3月9日，一次是5月26日。这两次送给主席的《三国演义》，都是徐业夫秘书让我从中国书店新购来的。”忻中还看到，毛泽东晚年在游泳池的书房里，除存放着多种平装版本的《三国演义》外，还一直放有两种线装木刻大字本的《三国演义》。其中一种是上海涵芬楼版，全名叫《三国志通俗演义》。他在生命的最后几年里，还常在书房里很有兴趣地翻阅这两部不同版本的《三国演义》。（忻中：《毛泽东晚年读书生活》，《党史文汇》杂志，1994年第9期。）

    据毛泽东的卫士尹荆山回忆：1962年的一天，毛泽东走出书房，在台阶上住了脚，仰天凝视，深吸一口气，忽然放开喉咙，唱出两句京戏。记得是《空城计》。卫士们一怔，随即交换眼色，无不流露欢颜。这两句京戏似乎宣告了三年困难时期的结束，我们都产生出“一唱雄鸡天下白”的感觉。到吃饭时间了，在尹荆山的建议下，毛泽东和家人一起吃了一顿饭。家常便饭，四菜一汤。毛泽东并不因为与家人一道吃饭而破坏习惯，仍然是手不释卷，边吃边看。不过，这次看的是小人书《火烧连营》，完全是放松大脑的一种独特方式。（孙宝义：《毛泽东的读书生涯》，知识出版社，1993年版，第157页。）

    因为爱读《三国演义》和《水浒传》，在长征行军途中，毛泽东还让警卫员去给自己找书来看，以致引起误会，闹出取来“仨锅”、“水壶”的笑话。

    毛泽东从不轻易放过别人研究三国的成果。20世纪50年代末，他在《北京日报》上读到了作家吴组缃的《关于〈三国演义〉》（三），就嘱咐秘书去找以前连载的两篇来看。

    1965年12月21日，毛泽东在杭州的一次讲话中说：“国民党的军官，陆军大学毕业的都不能打仗，黄埔军校只学几个月，出来就能打仗。我们元帅、将军，没有几个大学毕业的。我本来也没有读过军事书，只读过《左传》、《资治通鉴》，还有《三国演义》。这些书上都讲过打仗，但是打起仗来，一点印象都没有了。我们打仗，一本书也不带，只是分析敌我斗争的形势，分析具体情况。”（王子今：《毛泽东和中国史学》，中共中央党校出版社，1993年版，第158页。）

    警卫员谢过老先生，提起借来的水壶，兴奋地去见毛泽东，一进门就说：“主席，水壶拿来了，仨锅没找到。”毛泽东抬头一看，禁不住笑了。他把警卫员叫到身边，耐心地告诉他：“我要的不是烧水的水壶，也不是烧饭的大锅，而是中国的古代名著《水浒传》和《三国演义》。这是两部古书。”说罢，他又拿来一张纸在上面写出来，交给了警卫员，并告诉他今后要注意抓紧时间学习，干革命可不能闹笑话呀！

    20世纪60年代，毛泽东曾多次这样谈及：“1935年前后，当时党内有同志说我打仗的方法不高明，是照着两本书打的，一本是《三国演义》，另一本是《孙子兵法》。其实，打仗的事怎能照书本去打？那时，这两本书，我只看过一本――《三国演义》，另一本《孙子兵法》当时并没看。那个同志硬说我看过。我问他《孙子兵法》共有几篇？第一篇的题目叫什么？他答不上来。其实他也没有看过。从那以后，倒是逼使我去翻了翻《孙子兵法》。”（黄允升：《〈遵义会议纪实〉若干史实辨正》，《中共党史研究》，1992年第2期。）

    1949年，七届二中全会期间，华北军区政委薄一波，派李和曾为团长的华北京剧团到河北平山西柏坡演出。毛泽东一连两天都观看了演出。第一天，第一出戏是《宋江杀惜》，这是宋江被逼上梁山的一个故事，李和曾演宋江。第二出戏是《王佐断臂》，这是阿甲的拿手戏。最后一出戏，演的是《失空斩》，由李和曾扮演诸葛亮。（阎长林：《在大决战的日子里》，中国青年出版社，1986年版，第184页。）
