Daily Mix: October 2007 Archives

Back in May, we at Mixtapekings.com wondered what the next step was for The Clipse. Here's what's next...

The duo had a longstanding back-and-forth argument with their former label, Jive records. Officially released from Jive, the Virginia-bred duos confirmed their leave and are now negotiating with Columbia. The Clipse is no longer working with Star Trak Entertainment, known for the Neptunes.

Under Columbia, the rappers plan a third album hopefully working with Timbaland, Danjahandz and Dame Grease.

DJ Drama single-handedly became the mixtape industry's front man. If you were to put a face to the mixtape game, it'd be Drama's. All thanks to the feds mixtape raid earlier this year.
DJ Drama has been on the mixtape grind, making himself a cult-like leader to many, byway of his Gangsta Grillz mixtape series. The mixtape series has garnered a huge following so much so that music enthusiasts eagerly wait for each release. Now the watershed moment in Drama's career is the soon to arrive when Gangsta Grillz: The Album is released in December. The album is being released through Grand Hustle/Atlantic Records. His business partners DJ Cannon and DJ Sense run Aphillates Music Group, which also inked a deal with Asylum Records.

Gangsta Grillz: The Album is sure to be a hit, especially with the publicity his camp has been getting. Recently, colleague and rapper T.I. is facing weapon charges. It isn't the first time the DJ faces much drama from authorities. Back in January 2007, Drama and fellow Aphilliates affilate DJ Don Cannon were arrested during a raid of the Atlanta offices

Catch Drama on air in his "Gangsta Grillz Radio Show" on Atlanta's Hot 1079.

Peep game...

After "Joe Budden" the album, there was "Mood Muzik 1". DJ On Point thoroughly assisted the Def Jam outcast as he became one of the streets most reknowned mc's. It was meant to be a prelude to "The Growth", but with Def Jam pushing the album back more times than Dr. Dre did "Detox", Buddens' and On Point were forced to create another classic in "Mood Muzik 2".

With the relationship severed between Joe and Def Jam and "The Growth" now dropping on another label, this is the perfect time for "Mood Muzik 3". In Dec. 2007, Mixtapekings Inc., DJ On Point and one of the most important artist to drop a mixtape this year; Joe Budden's will bring you "Mood Muzik 3".

THE ALMIGHTY MIXTAPE has been responsible for launching countless careers in the hip-hop world and such is the story of these four youngins from the Bay Area known collectively as THE PACK.

One day rap veteran Too $hort was driving to a show in Berkeley when he heard somebody bumping The Pack's latest mixtape. He got out to see who it was and instantly decided he needed to find this group. It just so turned out he knew Uno's father and the rest is history as they say. Mix that type of serendipity with the hard work and grinding it took to put the mixtapes out and add the infinite reach of Myspace to their Based music (a combination of hyphy, crunk and Miami Bass) and you get instantaneous success. "I gotta be a star. Anything else would be uncivilized," casually says Stunnaman.

All under legal drinking and voting age, this hip-hop Based Music quartet has blown up and achieved monumental success spreading their California sound across the country. Their single "Vans" did for skateboarders what "Air Force Ones" did for Midwesterners, their episode of "You Heard It First" was the most viewed and downloaded show in MTV.com history, and their video held the #1 spot on MTV2 for several weeks and they have yet to release their debut album. And we thought Kanye was the only one who got that type of buzz before putting out an album.... Nope and with a record like this Mixtape Kings had to sit down with some of Jive Record's youngest and hottest in the game right now.

It was truly a pleasure to talk to Lil B, Stunnaman, Uno, and Young L. They are full of jokes, laughter, insight, and love for their mamas (yes they are mama's boys). Of course the first thing I had to ask is what has it been like working with Too $hort, the originator of raw and uncut rap. No crazy stories or outlandish adventures (at least none the minors shared) but they were full of admiration and respect saying $hort has taught them a lot about rap music and being focused to get your hands on the prize. In addition to having $hort as a mentor, Uno's dad used to rap back in the day with $hort, Stunnaman's brother makes beats, and his mom is a poet who started him acting at a young age providing multiple sources of advice and support for the teenagers.

Being fresh faces on a rap scene that has become redundant, The Pack has inspirations that range from James Brown, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Hendrix to modern day Jeezy, Fabolous, 2 Live Crew, and Pac, with their biggest influence being themselves. "I try to keep my mind fresh so I can create my own thing because when you are influenced by someone you somewhat recycle the person who inspired you," says Stunnaman who looks to himself for most of his inspiration. Perhaps this why they have made a made a courageous decision to have no features on their debut album outside of production, an 8 bar and a vocalist who makes a guest appearance, a rarity for an emerging group but fully confident of their skills and charisma the groups says they are not looking for other people's names to boost them.

With solid minds in place to keep them grounded, these young men are much more than rap's latest carnation of the boy band. They are well rounded and educated ensuring that a hit song or cd will not be the summation of their life. "A lot of people say I want to be a rapper and they focus 100% of their energy on that and don't look back. They don't have a backup plan. Anybody who wants to be anything in life needs to make sure they are in school," says Young L who was in college studying business until tour demands became too much. Stunnaman, on the other hand, reminds us that we can go to school even if we are not in school. "I'm from the hood off the block. I never could pay for college and I don't want to go into debt owing nobody nothing. My mother always taught me school is supposed to be free.I am going to make enough money and then pay for myself to go to college so I am not left owing. I am not knocking school or what professors teach but learn how to pick up a book because you want to and don't let school kill your creativity."

On that note (and after a back and forth about being self taught and going to college along with a whole lot of cracking on each other and jokes) the guys had to run to the next interview but before I let them go I had to find out what they had on their feet and see if anyone was wearing Vans. The answer: one pair of Vans, throwback 1996 Nikes, some Creative Recs, and Pradas.

Their last words to Mixtape Kings on the importance of the mixtape: "Having mixtapes out is a real push. It was a big help putting music out and flooding the streets. It is always a major boost. It gives everyone a chance to get a feel for you and helps you build life long supporters."

The Pack's debut album, "Based Boys" drops on Octoer 30th.

Mos Def signed a new deal with Downtown Records which released Gnarls Barkey's St.Elsewhere last year.

After releasing Tru3 Magic, his third solo album, last year through Geffen, Mos Def fulfilled his contract with the label.

Hovi's Home!

Jay-z debuts "Roc Boys (And the winner is...)" at 52 on the R&B/Hip Hop Billboard charts. "Blue Magic" debuted at 35 three weeks ago and stays put at 33.

And yes Soulja Boy continues on at number 1. And no, we don't know why.

Think Mobb Deep with the ability to spit knowledge. A-Alikes, a duo consisting of Ness and K, bridge a wide gap between empowering music and gangsta music on "The Hustler and The Hunted Part 2".

A Gangsta gospel that gets you nodding with hard beats, yet never unties its origins with Black people in this country and the current state of those living in the hood.

"Back to The Grind" is an inspiring track about the hustle of the artists over simple piano-laced track produced by Dr.Dre. The clever "Ducking from the Jake" samples the Nina Sky song produced by Cool & Dre, where A-Alikes switches up the chorus to fit their theme of choice; avoiding 5-0.

Duckin' the cops, not giving a fuck about the cops and hating the cops is traditional in hip hop music and it's also a recurring issue in "The Hustler and The Hunted Part 2". In doing so, it celebrates the guerilla spirit of the emcees. Alongside hating the police, the emcees highlight the wrong doings and injustice in the American legal systems. In-your-face lyrics tend to hit you over the head with political awareness.

Other tracks, like "Enemies" give advice about friends and foes and how to be weary of each, something many people can relate to.

The two most resonating tracks are "Something Horrible Happened" interlude where a woman emotionally screams into the mic about the lack of unity in the community; an interlude that everyone must listen to. And thereafter, the appropriately placed track "Timothy Stansbury aka Enuff is Enuff". The story of a young boy killed on the rooftop of a Brooklyn project.

All throughout the mixtape, empowering lyrics are heard and dope beats are knocking.

Whose To Blame?

| | Comments (4)

It seems that many are considering Hip Hop en Espanol to be violent and not worthy of promoting. Something that has always amused me not only on Hip Hop but with everything in general from Movies, TV and Radio shows. Through out the years people have been blaming everything but what the true blame is for all of the violence that occurs with our kids. We see murders taking place, kids killing each other on rampages and suicides happening for no apparent reason. The common denominator on all these occurrences is who/what gets blamed! MUSIC? TV? MOVIES?

Yes we can point the finger and say well, look at what they are saying or doing, children listen and mimic what they see and hear! Very True! But lets also think of one big part of that statement, "Children listen and mimic what they see and hear" so what are they seeing at home? If our kids are doing what they see and they are all of sudden doing such horrible things; did they see it at home? Somewhere down the line they are learning what they are doing and for people to say that they can honestly blame it on one thing in particular such as media I believe that's ignorant. First they copy what they see at the home, and secondly they live what see in their communities!

With all that said there isn't a true blame for what happens and takes place in society except to blame society itself! If we as a whole were able to better control what happens, truly have a judicial system that takes care of its people and police each other as we should, we would not face such dilemmas! Not one society through out the world has a perfect system; no one can say we have no violence or robberies happening! NO ONE is perfect! Society is driven by so many different factors that it would be almost impossible to ever resolve each of them, but we need to start somewhere!

Money is the root to all evil, if we were not human we wouldn't have this urge to be greedy and have everything we want. If we would live our lives comfortably without the need of over extending ourselves, we wouldn't live life struggling! All of these things cause problems to arise, greed causes you to do thing that take it to another level and create horrible situations. It starts from the root and reaches to the tip of each branch; life is dying because we allow it to die. My issue with blaming Music, not just specific genres but all music in general makes me laugh only because they are only saying what they see; only expressing what they have been feeling for so many years! What is wrong with that?

If you teach your child to do something from an early stage in life, they will do it! If you tell them not to steal, curse, KILL! They won't do it! But if you don't instill morals and love into a child they will grow into the worst possible creatures imaginable. Stealing comes from need of something to also the greed of wanting it. If we have all of our children grow up to be studious and hard working men and women we wouldn't be faced with them having to steal because they can maintain themselves and never have a need.

It just bothers me to see people holding back a movement that has been so long in the making because they feel that what they sing about is wrong. Yes I don't condone what they do and say, but why stop the expression of it? Why can't you take your child and explain to them that what they are listening to is not what they should do? Is it because we are lazy and do not want to take a moment in our lives to teach a child? But yet fall back and buy them the very thing that you blame for their behavior? That is ridiculous! Right now possibly the biggest thing to happen to Latin music is taking place and now we see people blocking it because they say that artists such as Temperamento, Lapiz, Vakero, Toxic Crow and so many more are a bad influence and say and do too many things that they shouldn't! Why shouldn't they?

Their not teaching them anything, just doing what they do on an everyday basis, acting as they always do. If you don't like it, don't let your child buy the CD, prevent them from watching the videos, but do not stop someone from speaking freely. We were not only given that right by law but also by God! This topic is possibly one of the most controversial topics I have ever chosen to speak on but one that just amuses me, because I can't believe that people will not take blame for their own children. It starts at home people, stop them at the door and they will not open and go through it!

The Dominican Republic is facing a huge rising of great talent and artists that have so much to show and prove, but yet we have people writing in and complaining that they shouldn't be allowed to come to the States because of their lyrics? Yeah like we don't have artists here doing worse! As if the movies, novelas and music we have here are any better! Reality is that parents as a whole need to take responsibility for their own, and raise their children properly. I was raised in a home where we understood everything taking place; we saw it and chose not to live it. The neighborhood we were raised in was not the best in the city but yet we survived and prospered, a child is only as good as the parent which raises them.

Stop the cycle if you were raised incorrectly, Love your child and make it a point to teach them properly and you will not see them turn out bad. I have been listening to Hip Hop since I was 8 years old, and I haven't killed, raped or robbed anyone and millions of other people haven't also. At times we will have unfortunate cases where someone is not mentally stable and do things without control, but for the most part it can be avoided with proper guidance. Music is expression, Movies are stories and Radio is life as it happens, you can not stop any of it when it deals with reality of who we are and what we do. Let our expression be without boundaries, let us grow and prosper.

Hispanics have been struggling for years to fit where they say we don't, our artists trying to find a place where they can feel comfortable to express themselves and for us to stop them because of certain things isn't fair. First we thought Reggaeton was too sexual so we banned it in certain countries and now Hip Hop en EspaƱol is too dangerous to allow into the United States (one of the most violent driven countries in the world). Yea that makes perfect sense. Hip Hop wasn't stopped when it started and I can express with 100% certainty that the movement of Spanish Hip Hop will not be held back, if anything it will be catapulted beyond what many are expecting. Be Ready!

Jive Records announced today that the label is moving up the release date of Britney Spears' latest release Blackout to October 30th.

Recently, songs from Britney's Spears' forthcoming album, along with unfinished material and demos represented as completed legitimate songs, were leaked on-line. A label spokesperson stated, "due to these numerous unauthorized on-line leaks, the label is doing everything possible to prevent and avoid any further illegal distribution of songs including moving up the release date of the album to October 30th.

BathGate is Back

Bathgate is back. Known for his underground hit "Bump That" from his album "Dear Rich America, My Story to You" which is still unreleased since 2000. Now under an independent label, Capital Gang Records, Bathgate is releasing "Hard Candy."

Bathgate, usually behind the scenes penning lyrics for Fabolous, Trina and Diddy, he has also has worked on tracks for DJ Kay Slay, Clue, Whoo Kid, Envy and Purple City.

Prior to releasing his second album "You Win Some, You Loose Some" in 2008, Cons is collaborating with Whoo Kid for a mixtape project The Cons Vol. 5 "Refuse to Die." Expect cameos from Nas, Beyonce, Mary J.Blige, Collie Budz, Musiq Soulchild and the one and only Patti Labelle.

"This is the first-ever G-Unit/G.O.O.D. Music collaboration, so it should be historic. This is what I offer to the game and if you f*** with it, you f*** with it. Take away the gear and the jewels, it's just music. I've always tried to make music that relates to the relatable. Like, I've been in this situation because that's what made me write it... That's what I'm trying to bring to the table...This is the kind of hip-hop that everybody grew up on," declared Consequence.

Coming soon to Mixtapekings.com.

What happens when a Queens-bred DJ and a Brooklyn rapper join forces? The Co-Op!!! That's what happens. DJ Envy is a two-time winner of Just-O Mix Tape Award, one of New York's leading club & mix tape DJs as well as a Mixshow DJ on Hot97 and if that isn't enough on his plate DJ Envy currently serves as President & CEO of BLOK Entertainment, his own management and production company that has already produced scorching tracks for artist such as DMX, Murderers, Funk Flex, Foxy Brown, Juvenile, Petey Pablo, Fabolous and more. When I asked him how he accomplished all this in a short span of 10 years he simply responded, "I stay consistant & persistant, I don't sleep, theres always a young DJ out there trying to take my spot and I'm not ready to give it up yet".

Mainstream music listeners are just now getting a taste of Red Cafe, the man who underground audiences have heralded as a legend for almost a decade now. When I asked him why he thinks it took so long for his music to go mainstream Red Cafe responded, "I don't compromise! What I give is honesty from my walks & journeys".

Both of these talented artists have been on the same journey yet on 2 different paths, encountering the same trials and tribulations otherwise known as Industry Rule 4080 (record company are shady). Red Cafe signed his 1st deal with Violater Records at age 19 and said "I have had a new deal every year since 1998, whenever they tried to take me for a sucker: I left". DJ Envy released his first LP, The Desert Storm Mixtape: Blok Party Vol. 1, in 2003 by Sony Records; it only sold 110,00 units despite featuring notable artists like Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and DMX. Envy was quoted "I put my life onto that Sony album," "I was so disgusted with Sony and the system that they had in place, so I said I'd never do another record in my life. But all it takes is one good artist or one feel good record to make you change your mind. Red Cafe came in the picture, and when we started doing records it made me want to do an album. Everything came out so good and so smoothly that I had to give it another a chance."

When I asked them both what they learned from their experiences, it was easy for both of them to respond, "we learned the ins and outs of a deal, and together we know our shit, we have our own money & together we invest in ourselves, we also have a great lawyer". I asked how the two met, Envy replied "I would see him in the clubs consistant with his music, we got together and put out 30 to 40 songs and I said we have to do something with this" DJ Envy refered to him and Red Cafe as the "Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff of 08".

The Co-Op, you know I had to ask how that name came about, we all know what it means but I asked them how did it relate to them? LOL, DJ Envy asked me" do you know the show THE WIRE?" I said yes, (DJ Envy)" its like the wire you have the North click, South, East and West, all doing their thing separetly until they all got together and formed a Co-Op, same here We came together and formed our Co-Op"

These guys haven't stopped working either Red Cafe informed me that they are both working on their solo projects, which led me to ask where do they find the time to do all of this? DJ Envy said "we priortize go do a club at night, wake up and do my morning show, going back and forth". It doesn't stop there either both these men have businesses outside the music industry, Red Cafe told me "I own real estate properties as well as strip clubs, while DJ Envy owns a couple of houses".

DJ Envy & Red Cafe 2 guiding staples of New York's urban scene join forces to form The Co-Op and present it's Moving!!!! Volume 1. In stores now!!.

Here is a little inside information, DJ Envys favorite track is called "Buck-Buck", Red Cafes favorite track is "Invisible" and if you care my favorite track is the Nina Sky-assisted "Things You Do". It's a must get album if you love music, period!

If you would like to get a hold of either DJ Envy or Red Cafe you can click on there myspace links below, and incase you are wondering yes I did ask them do they answer their own myspace or does someone else do it for them, the reply was simply the best "its part of the daily grind, we check It everyday".

Since the weather was mild enough not to complain about, then the three hour wait for the last guest to arrive on the- Hennessy Artistry Concert Tour red carpet won't reach the complaint box either; and since there is nothing to complain about... this leaves the rest of the evening (the party time) impressive indeed.

Nikki Beach (151 E. 50th Street, NYC) is the place Hennessy chose for their event, and proved to be a place that exuded an ambiance of familiarity which relaxed everyone just enough to have a good time, while its decor and well trained staff made everyone in attendance aggressive enough to network and drink. Being able to rub elbows with the likes of Nick Cannon (Wild'n Out), Chrisette Michelle (Def Jam's latest R&B talent), Terrance and Rosci (106 & Park), Laura Styles and DJ Spin One (La Kalle 105.9 radio FM) and many others, is a treat worth mentioning, especially when all of them were as down to earth and party oriented as anyone else I know.

The number one selling cognac in the world mixed up cocktails which flowed as abundant as the Nile, and continued to find its way into my glass (how'd that happen!??). This of course, was rivaled only by the vibrations of BOOM, AND THUMP that resounded throughout every corner of space at Nikki Beach, like the sight of colored bars from a digital equalizer laying up and down until it reached the ear of every person standing or sitting, and finally introducing itself as music.

I had a great time, met lots of people, and got my drink on! Mixing it up with Hennessy Artistry was a good move for a Tuesday night, and thankfully, they're not done yet! This tour will reach other local US cities including Los Angeles "with the highly anticipated Finale Event featuring some of the most formidable performers in music today. The finale event will also commemorate Hennessy's new Flaunt Your Taste ad campaign." Will Mixtape Kings Mix it up with Hennessy again.. Well, will we?

Everybody wants be B.I.G. , including Beanie Sigel. The broadstreet Bully recently auditioned for the lead role in the Biggie bio film.

Beanie said to MTV recently. "The fact that I'm a huge Big fan from the gate is why I did it. Then taking myself outside of myself and looking back, who else better to play that role, man?" he added.

Beanie hasn't heard back about his audition, yet. The filmmakers are holding open auditions for the role and will look at everyone before making a decision.

An open casting call is being held at City Stages (435 West 19th Street, New York, NY 10011) on Saturday (October 6) from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. For more information, visit Foxsearchlight.com/Notorious or BiggieCasting.com.

We hope this is a passing fad. This CAN'T be a positive business move. Exploiting and glamorizing criminal action in your lyrics is one thing, but a tangible representation of your bid or your homie's bid. Please stop it.

Teen heart throbs Bow Wow and Omarion join chart-topping forces by collaborating on their "Face Off" album, a bubble-gum delight of Hip Hop and R&B. It's no doubt that this album will be a classic among many adolescents.

Both artists achieved major success with their duo the first time around on "Let Me Hold You," a song that peaked on #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005. That same year, Bow Wow and Omarion hit the road as co-headliners on the Scream Tour IV Presents: The Heart Throb Tour.

"We're anxious to make this whole thing happen. It's gonna be a special event. It's gonna be crazy, something the people have been waiting on -- the girls have been waiting on -- for years. O's one of my best friends. Anytime you get a chance to work with somebody you're best friends with, it's not even work, it's like working with family," said Bow Wow to Billboard.com earlier this month.
