Interviews: May 2007 Archives
1. Teknikz, where are you from and how long have you been making mixtapes?
I'm originally from Kenya, but I'm in the A now been doin' my thing for a minute. I really started making mixtapes in 97 bullshitting around but really got serious with it in like 2005. So I guess I can say my first official mixtape came out in 2005
2. Every Southern DJ has a mixtape series. What separates Georgia Power from the others?
Alot...Its one of its kind. When I started it I had never seen another mixtape down south with the same idea or concept behind Georgia power. Instead of showcasing solo artists I showcase a whole label. Well after Ga Power I have seen other mixtapes with kind of the same idea behind
them but with a different twist. So I know I inspired a lot of DJ's to step their game up.
3. Have you always concentrated on Southern music?
No I'm very versatile. I have a rich music background. I have DJ'd in Hip Hop club, Reggae clubs, drum n bass, techno, garage music, etc. I'm known for Southern music though. But for favors believe your boy gets it in. I actually did do an East Coast Dipset mixtape about a year ago.
4. How has your series been received in Georgia and the markets that
surround u?
The reception is amazing! From the first Georgia Power (CTE VS GRAND HUSTLE) it took off. I remember only one site was fuck*ng with me before that and when it dropped The late UNIT was calling around trying to get my contact info saying they heard what it did in Atlanta and they wanted to carry it.
Georgia Power is beyond ATL and surrounding states...and I have big
plans for it.
5. How has the Drama situation affected the mixtape climate in Atlanta?
I remember the day that happened. I was scheduled to drop Georgia Power 2 the next day after the news hit I was like wtf...so after thinkin it out I was like man its time to stand up for what we believe in. This is all I know. It was kind of slow when we hit the block a few spots kinda shunn'd the game but other than that it was really grind mode as usual. There are too many people who are part of the game in Atlanta for it to just come to a stand still.
6. Is there anything you would like to tell the Mixtapekings fans about yourself and your mixtape series?
